Welcome to the Sing, Write, Play! Melody Speller Workshop

Sing, Write, Play! Melody Speller

The Sing, Write, Play! Melody Speller is a beginner's introduction to music transcription. It goes much further than note spellers in connecting music literacy to what counts: the sound of music!

Melody spelling is a more meaningful form of melodic dictation. The melodies to be transcribed are so familiar (for example, Mary Had a Little Lamb) that many students will not even need to hear them played on an instrument to be reminded how they sound!

Melody spelling makes the activities of interval identification and melodic dictation intrinsically rewarding. Try melody spelling today and see what music literacy really means!

This website is a companion to the Sing, Write, Play! Melody Speller workbook. To take full advantage of the site you will need the Adobe Flash plug-in.

The entire thirty-two page workbook is available right here in PDF format for just $5.95. Upon purchase, the workbook will be emailed to you (we strive to get the workbook into your email inbox within 72 hours of your order). Work through the entire Sing, Write, Play! Melody Speller, or, if you are a teacher, you can print out specific pages as worksheets for your students.

The current workbook is for C instruments on the treble clef. You will also find that all of the melodies in the workbook are notated in C. This serves three purposes:

  1. It keeps the workbook accessible for beginning or early-intermediate students.
  2. Having all of the melodies in the same key helps to draw out similarities between melodies–an important part of the Melody Speller strategy.
  3. Having all of the melodies in C lets the workbook be useful regardless of whether teachers and students are using moveable do or fixed do.

Make the world a more musical place: become a Melody Speller!
