Sample Pages

The Sing, Write, Play! Melody Speller is divided into five sections, the first of which takes up just one page.

The first section illustrates how a simple ascending or descending scale can be recognized in a well-known song. The examples used in the Melody Speller are The First Noel and Joy to the World.

The three middle sections of the Melody Speller are devoted to analyzing and comparing melodies' beginnings, middles, and endings. In each section the student is writing solfege syllables, notes, or both. The writing activities have been designed to ensure a high rate of success for the students' enjoyment and confidence. Three pages in PDF format are given here:

The music in the Melody Speller is made available in The Melodies section of this workshop.

The fifth section of the Melody Speller features writing activities involving whole sections of songs. One of the activities is the Music Jumble. Each month, a fresh Music Jumble will be published on this website. The principle behind the activity is demonstrated here by a simple interactive Music Jumble.
